The Abs Diet: General Information
Diet Author The Abs diet was brought to the arena of nutritional approaches in 2004 by David Zinczenko. Though practically all the books on the Abs diet are written in co-authorship with Ted Spiker, it is David, who is considered to be the creator of the diet.
Though there is no much data on the biography of David Zinczenko, it is known that his family tree has Ukrainian, Russian and German roots. Nowadays he is one of the most popular American authors on healthy eating and fitness (by the way, he participated in the New York City Marathon twice!). In addition to writing about the Abs diet, David Zinczenko is an editor-in-chief of Men’s Health, a world known magazine, designed exclusively for men.
Ted Spiker is an assistant professor of journalism at the University of Florida, whose works periodically appear in the Fortune, The Oprah Magazine, InStyle, Sports Illustrated Women, and Adventure Sports; he is also contributing to the Men’s Health magazine.
Diet Categorization In fact, the Abs diet cannot be referred to any of the traditional trends in dieting. Many experts label the Abs as the diet, designed exclusively for men, aimed not only at improving overall health, but at building the six-pack abs as the integral part of male sexuality. At the same time, the author of the diet says that women are also invited to follow the diet's principles and teach their bodies to burn fat.
According to David Zinczenko, the Abs diet is not a low-carb, low-fat, or low-anything-else diet. Mostly, the principles of the Abs correspond to the “official” rules of eating, combined with undoubtedly healthy advises on exercising.
Diet History The principles of the diet were first described in the book “The Abs Diet: The Six-Week Plan to Flatten Your Stomach and Keep You Lean for Life,” published in 2004. Since then Zinczenko has published several books, promoting the basics of the Abs diet and offering readers meal recipes, practical tips and guidelines on the diet.
Diet motto The diet is focused on the suggestion that muscles eat fat. Thus, adding one pound of muscle requires the body to burn 50 calories a day additionally just to keep that muscle alive. For example 6 pounds of gained muscles provide burning 300 calories a day without any change in the eating habits. So, one may lose weight not by eating less, but by building more muscles due to consuming 12 pre-packed power foods and having 30-minutes workouts three times a week.
The diet promotes eating 6 times a day with preference given to such foods as nuts, beans, legumes, spinach, fat-free diary, eggs, lean meat, olive oil and raspberries.
The Abs diet recommends tabooing salted foods, saturated fats, cereals, whole milk and trans-fatty foods.
Diet Duration The Abs diet is designed to teach the body burn excessive fat and build muscles in just 6 weeks. However, the 6-week cycles may be repeated as much as it is necessary to reach the target weight and keep it at the desired level.
What improvements are declared by the diet? The diet author does not give exact numbers of pounds that will be lost while on the Abs diet. In fact, this is quite understandable, since all the humans are different and weight loss progress depends on personal factors greatly. At the same time, the diet followers report about 10 - 15 to 25 pounds weight loss for the 6 week period. Besides weight loss, following the Abs diet helps to add extra points to one’s general appearance and sexuality rating thanks to the decreased body fat and shaped abs muscles.
