The Blood Type Diet: General Information

Diet Author The idea of the individual approach to dieting, based on the blood type of a dieter, was initially suggested and researched by Dr. James D'Adamo. His son, Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo, continued his father's research and finally created the practical guideline to dieting, called the Blood Type Diet.

Nowadays, Dr. Peter D’Adamo is one of the noted naturopaths in the USA. He was named 1990 Physician of the Year by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. Besides his research activity, Dr. D’Adamo is also the founder and editor of The Journal of Naturopathic Medicine. So, his professional career is focused mainly on researching the natural products and investigating the role of blood types in determining individual diet.

Dr. D’Adamo was named the Most Intriguing Health Author of 1999. Frankly speaking, this title was granted to him not in vain, because his approach to dieting is mostly perceived by the registered dietitians and nutrition experts as the intrigue, which is based on highly controversial concept with too little scientific background.

On the other hand, the books on the Blood Type Diet are rather popular among consumers. Thus, the diet is still a significant phenomenon in the world of weight-loss strategies.

Diet Categorization In fact, placing the Blood Type Diet into one of the known diet types is impossible, since the program includes different approaches to dieting, determined by the dieter’s blood type.

For example, those with blood type 0 are recommended to follow high-protein, low-carbohydrate eating plan; people with blood type A are encouraged to become vegetarians, and those with the blood type B are allowed to eat practically all foods without many significant restrictions and limitations. Since the first publishing, the book on the Blood Type Diet has gained plenty of both positive and negative feedbacks. The book joined the list of New York Times best-sellers and was translated into over 50 languages.

Nowadays, there are a lot of books on the Blood Type Diet, including individually-orientated books, which describe eating regimen for specific blood type or explain how to use Blood Type Diet to treat such conditions, as allergies, cancer, aging or fatigue.

Diet motto The central point of the Blood Type Diet is the suggestion that the blood type is the major factor to consider while determining what type of diet one should follow.

According to Dr. D'Adamo, there is a connection between each blood type and the way human organism deal with the consumed foods. Consequently, eating foods, which comply with the blood type of a person, leads to health improvement, while eating "wrong" foods, which do not suit your blood type, is the way to worsen overall health, gain weight, and develop different diseases.

Perhaps, the most amazing and at the same time amusing thing about the Blood Type Diet is its strategy in determining what foods are "good" for specific blood types. The author uses the theory of blood type evolution to define good and bad foods and encourages modern people follow the eating patterns, which were typical for the times, when a particular blood type was first identified. That is why, for people with blood type 0, for example, the diet offers high-protein eating plan with plenty of meat and fish - the typical menu of our ancestors, living around 50.000 BC.

Diet Duration Since the Blood Type Diet is mostly focused on teaching people to choose the proper foods, based on their individual blood type, this diet offers, in fact, four different eating programs. There are no time-limited stages or phases of following the Blood Type Diet.

However, since many principles of the diet are not scientifically proved, the experts do not recommend following the Blood Type Diet for a long time. Anyway, it is reasonable to follow the diet recommendations for short period (up to 7 days) in order to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the diet in the particular case.

What improvements are declared by the diet? Though the official web-site of Dr. D'Adamo claims his diet to be effective for 8 out of 10 people, it does not state the exact achievements, such as weight loss rate, one should expect from the diet.

We can only rely on the book title, saying that the Blood Type Diet is the way to reach at least three goals: stay healthy, live longer, and achieve one’s ideal weight. On the other hand, many experts in nutrition are optimistic about the ability of the Blood Type Diet to ensure weight loss, since very often it recommends limiting some of the food groups. Under such circumstances human organism has nothing to do but to use its internal storages (such as fat, for example) in order to compensate the missing nutritional elements.
