The Zone Diet: How it Works

When you follow the Zone Diet, your aim is to enter the Zone. But how to find this weight loss Mecca, if it does not have any geographic coordinates? And what processes and changes will your body be faced with, when the Zone is finally found and entered?

Though the Zone is not shown on any map, it is not a mysterious place. Dr. Sears, the creator of the Zone Diet, uses the "Zone" term to name certain physiological condition of a human, in which the levels of hormones (insulin, cortisol, and eicosanoids) are kept within the strict limits, which are neither too high, nor too low. According to Dr. Sears, his diet helps a dieter bring his weight-regulating hormones to the happy medium.

According to the Zone Diet, the malfunction of human hormonal system may cause the so-called “silent inflammation”, which is the major cause of many chronic diseases, such as heart diseases, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. Besides, the Zone Diet claims inflammation of the fat cells to be the main culprit of the excessive body weight.

Silent inflammation is not a typical inflammation with widely-known symptoms, such as swelling, redness and pain. It is a condition, which takes years and even decades to develop, but it affects the human organism on the cellular level, causing many chronic diseases and breaking the hormonal balance of the organism.

Dr. Sears says that silent inflammation cannot be stopped by anti-inflammatory drugs, because they often cause serious side effects. So, he recommends certain eating regimen (the Zone Diet) to prevent silent inflammation, improve health and get rid of the excessive body fat. Taking into account that silent inflammation is caused by improper activity of the hormones, such as insulin, the Zone eating recommendations are called to regulate the levels of those hormones.

In order to enter the Zone (or bring the hormones to their optimal levels), Dr. Sears’ program offers eating regimen, based on the specific combination of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, plus Omega fish oil concentrates as the supplement to the daily ration.

A dieter is recommended to prepare his meals so that 40% of all calories were derived from carbohydrates, 30% - from proteins and 30% - from fats. This ratio is called to decrease the level of glucose (sugar) in blood, which in its turn reduces the level of insulin. This is the way the Zone Diet regulates insulin level.

Fish oil is another essential component of the Zone Diet, which predisposes the influence of the diet on the human organism. The Zone diet recommends its followers to consume extra-refined fish oil, called OmegaRx Fish Oil Concentrates.

These concentrates are natural source of essential fatty acids, which help to control eicosanoid hormones in the human body. Eicosanoids are produced by every cell in the organism, but there are “good” and “bad” hormones. Good eicosanoids decrease inflammation, while “bad” ones increase it. Consequently, regulating the activity of these hormones is important in reduction of the silent inflammation and ensuring weight loss. The Zone Diet offers fish oil supplements as the main method to regulate the eicosanoids.

The following two statements can be used as the short summary of the Zone Diet mode of action explanation: 1) Silent inflammation is the main culprit of chronic diseases development and excessive weight gain in people; 2) The Zone diet, based on the 40:30:30 ratio between carbohydrates, proteins and fats, plus fish oil concentrates is the only drugs-free way to stop silent inflammation and ensure weight loss against a background of general health improvements.
