She was also a member of the Advisory Council of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIH), and a member of the National Task Force on the Prevention and Treatment of Obesity.

She has been especially interested in the issues concerning food and fluid intake, and its influence on the development of obesity and different eating disorders. The results of her long-term research formed the basis for the Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan, which later grew into the Volumetrics Eating Plan.

Diet Categorization
The Volumetrics diet is, to some extent, a unique weight-loss strategy, because it does not blame carbs, fats or proteins for the development of obesity. Consequently, it cannot be defined as low-fat, low-carb or high-protein diet.

In fact, the Volumetrics Eating Plan is a new trend in dieting, where the key point is encouraging people to eat more instead of eating less.

Diet History
During her career Dr. Barbara Rolls authored more than 200 scientific works, but the wide popularity came to her with the publication of the Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan in 2002. In year 2007 the basic principles of the diet were restated, as well as many new recipes were offered in the book “The Volumetrics Eating Plan: Techniques and Recipes for Feeling Full on Fewer Calories”. The diet described in this book was rated #1 diet of the year 2007 in the USA.

Many nutritional experts and dietitians support the weight-loss strategy, developed and offered by Dr. Rolls, as the healthiest way of losing weight available these days.

Diet Motto
Feel fuller with fewer calories – this is the quintessence of the Volumetrics diet. The strategy is based on the statement that people like to eat. Consequently, any diet, encouraging people to eat less, will fail sooner or later. That is why Dr. Rolls offered another and quite opposite way of dieting.

The Volumetrics is focused on the satiety and the feeling of fullness for dieters. According to Dr. Roll, people feel full not because of amount of calories, but because of the total amount of food consumed.

That is why, the Volumetrics Eatring Plan is designed so that a dieter could eat larger amounts of food (this makes him full), provided that those foods are low in calories (this is necessary in order to lose weight).

The concept of foods’ energy density is the key concept of the Volumetrics diet. Energy density is the amount of calories in the specified amount of food. If a small amount of certain product provides large amount of calories – this product is said to have high energy density and vice versa. In order to provide weight loss the Volumetrics diet encourages people prefer low energy density foods, such as non-starchy vegetables, fruits, non-fat milk and soup broths.

Diet Duration

There are no defined stages or phases for following the Volumetrics Eating Plan. Obviously, it is because the diet is not about restricting certain products or planning the exact amount of calories in one’s meals.

The book is mainly focused on explaining people the theory of energy density of different foods, and explaining how one can use this theory in order to create personal weight-loss menu plan.

What improvements are declared by the diet?

“I want it all and I want it now” is not the motto of the dieters following the Volumetrics Eating Plan. Instead of promoting quick and significant weight-loss, Dr. Rolls stands on a position that stable losing one or two pounds of body weight per week is a great result for dieters on the Volumetrics.

In total, it is said that the Volumetrics diet may provide losing up to 10 % of one’s current body weight.
